Inflation in South Africa is creating a food crisis. Township families are struggling to put food on the table for themselves and their children, naturally pets are being hit the hardest
De Doorns is a community in crisis. As their only access to veterinary care Sidewalk Specials are working alongside the community to keep dogs and cats fed, sterilised and healthy
In between emergency call outs we are relentlessly flagged down by community members in need of help, who do not have access to phones or social media to contact us directly.
Most days feel like working in between a rock and a hard place, social media comments are full of ideal solutions, but there is no ideal solution to a crisis of this scale.
To immediately take animals away and try to re home them in an already overflowing welfare system, which already sees thousands of unwanted pets euthanised monthly, is insanity
Removing an animal without trying, without educating and assisting the owner, means eventually another animal will replace them to live out the same fate.
Education to improve the animals life, emergency vet care to relieve immediate suffering, and sterilisation to prevent over population, is the kindest solution here. ‘Helpin’ not Judgin’
