When we post rescues like this, we can already hear the responses:
“Why do they even have dogs”
“You shouldn’t have a dog if you can’t take care of it”
“Don’t take him back there”
The fact is that millions of South Africans live in poverty, without access to basic services. And yes, hundreds of thousands of domestic animals coexist alongside them, without access to basic vet care.
Where is the outrage for the humans? The women? The children?…Or have we all decided that they ‘chose’ to live there?…
Where are the hundreds of thousands of non township homes waiting in line to adopt the township pets that people demand we confiscate?…Nowhere. South Africa’s staggering euthanasia statistics prove that
There’s no easy solution but spouting vitriol on social media helps neither man nor animal. And frankly, responding to another’s suffering with such hatred speaks more to hardwired racism than to a love of animals.
Until we stop judging each other, and start helping each other, no lasting change will come about
Mass sterilisation of pets, education of owners, vet care being made accessible in townships – this is how we change the future of South Africa’s township pets!
